South Island Swing Dance Competitions 2019

Coming to Christchurch: 24th and 25th of August 2019!
It’s Swingtown’s turn to host the South Island Swing Dance Competitions in Christchurch this year, and we’re doing something a little bit different! Rather than running it as part of a different event, we are doing it’s own weekend.

The competitions have run for 8 years now, and are open to entry from anyone keen to compete for glory or just for a chance to have some fun in a supportive environment – it’s a great chance to turbo charge your dancing, whatever your level! You don’t have to be from the South Island, we love visitors! (although if you’re a North islander or from further afield you’re gonna have to *bring it* if you wanna steal our (mostly metaphorical) trophies away). And equally if competing is just not your jam, there’s fun workshops which will be relevant far beyond competitions, an awesome social dance with live band, and then a chance to cheer on your buddies as they strut their stuff! What could be better!

Special guest teachers and judges Michael and Leo from Wellington! Plus Special performance workshop from our very own class acts Sarah and Jess. See their bios here.

Registrations are open from 7  July to 18th August – see here for details.

Competition categories, details and rules are here.

Check out the schedule here, but here’s a run down:

There’ll be some competition-related workshops on Saturday so if you’re new to competing you can come and learn the ropes, or if you’re an old hand there might just be some tips and tricks you can pick up to jazz up your dancing – either way, they’ll be fun! See here for details and schedule of the workshops.

And then because we all just wanna dance, Saturday night will be predominantly a fun social dance with a live band (band tbc), and we can all have fun dances with visiting dancers and really get our groove on. Plus the SHOWCASE category will run on Saturday night, so this is really your chance to see (or do!) some amazing things!

Sunday is the comps day proper, where the Novice, Strictly, Mix ‘n Match lindy hop and balboa versions, Solo, Fast&Furious categories will be happening (running all of these will be dependent on numbers) – you can come along, perform and support your buddies.

Family and friends welcome to come and watch/support crew! Then afterwards we will repair to a local watering hole for a prize giving and a hang out. There’s nothing on Saturday morning or late afternoon on Sunday so plenty of time for travel arrangements if you’re from out of town.

Sound like fun? Sounds like fun!! Book it in your diaries now, and follow the facebook event as well to get updates, or arrange competition partners/hosting/car pooling etc.
