Swingtown Rebels is a swing dancing school based in Christchurch, New Zealand. The Rebels was started in Nov 2010 by two sisters, Becky Collett and Sarah Cawston with the help of hugely supportive friends and family.
These days the Rebels is helmed by Alicia Moggre, amongst a great gang of dancers who make the Rebels what we are – we have a real culture of lots of people pitching in to help where it is needed and build the fun, friendly, community focused scene that we have today! Swingtown Rebels has a large crew of teachers and dancers who aim to bring a high level of fun social dancing, classes and performances to as many people as possible in Christchurch! Basically we all just love swing dancing, and want to share it – whether it be performing, social dancing or teaching! Our repertoire includes an array of swing dance styles from the 1920s, 30s and 40s including Lindyhop, Blues, Balboa, Collegiate Shag, Charlestons and Burlesque and jazz-style strolls.
The main focus of Swingtown Rebels is to get people having fun and sharing the joy of swing dancing! A common thing that people say when they come out dancing is “everybody is so happy!” Trust us – it’s pretty hard to be sad when you’re dancing to awesome music with a fun group of people, and let’s be honest some of the moves could be considered fairly silly (we have moves called pecks, jelly legs, messabouts and many many more!) The other thing we love is that its something people of all ages, backgrounds, fitness, abilities can do together!
