PCX 2017 – People

So that you know what’s what, here’s an overview of who’s who at PCX…

PCX is really all about the music, so we make it a real focus of the event to get top quality live music playing at as many events as possible! This year we are lucky to have a wonderful selection of local Christchurch musicians lined up to wow us!

Thursday 21 September – Sideline Swing

Sideline Swing is a Christchurch based Big Band which has been around since 1994.  Sideline Swing generally performs as a 15 piece band with Trumpets, Trombones, Saxophones, Vocals, Drums, Keyboard, Guitars, and Bass. Some tunes call for additional or variable instruments, so these are added as necessary.

Friday 22 September – All Girl Big Band

All Girl Big BandIn a largely male dominated musical genre, to see a full jazz big band on stage with a woman in each section is one thing. To find a full big band of women is stunning. Full sections of trombone, trumpet, sax and rhythm, played with class and style. Add two powerhouse vocalists and you’ll be blown away! The All Girl Big Band formed in January 2016 and has played successful gigs for Swingtown Rebels but also performed at various other events.  The band consists of an array of talented musicians – the majority are professional musicians or music teachers in Christchurch. We are lucky enough to have a wide range of ages too, from high school student age to our most mature member at 77, who took up the trombone in her late 40’s!

–Saturday afternoon Cruisin’ — Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers

Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers started out trying to be a western swing band, about 80 years too late but who’s counting. And they still do that, to the great delight of many swing dancers who’ll Lindy hop the night away to their whisky fueled outpourings.

With the remarkable voice of their leader Anita Clark, it was soon obvious that you couldn’t keep them down on the farm for long. That voice longed to wrap itself around some incandescent swing jazz tunes, fiery torch songs, maybe some bizarre exotica, even the kind of songs you’d close dance to with your high school sweetheart back in the 50s.

Serving as the foundation to (and sometimes the flashy neon sign above) Anita’s vocals, we have a line up of slippery yet jagged violin (Anita), tectonic yet quake-damaged double bass (Michael Kime), and irresponsible yet anxious guitar (Simon Gregory). These frenetic miscreants like to play their instruments somewhere slow and gentle, all the way to fast and furious, their enthusiasm sometimes almost tripping over their technique (far better that way than vice versa).

–Saturday evening – River City Jazzmen

Rivercity Jazzmen

These guys are a great fun six piece Dixie-swing jazz band who play high energy, world class jazz music that’s perfect for dancing to. We can promise you they are not to be missed!

–Saturday late night – Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers ROUND TWO!
Oh my goodness, we’re SO EXCITED that we’ve convinced these guys to come play for us twice at PCX this year. If you’ve danced to them before you’ll know why! If not… come and find out!

–Sunday late afternoon: L’il Chuck the One Man Skiffle Machine

lil chuck

After the hugely successful main event at the Christchurch Swing Festival in May 2017, where the competitions were held to live music provided by Christchurch dancers’ most favourite one man band, we could not wait to ask him back.  An amazing performer on a variety of instruments, L’il Chuck will have you on your feet and dancing in no time!

–Sunday night: PCX Jammers!

The PCX Jammers are the most awesome Pocket Change tradition, that dates back to the first year of the exchange – a group of musically minded dancers decided to get together and make a swing band themselves! What could be better than dancers playing for dancers – they know just the type of music and style that is just right for you to STFO14188418_10154467576838210_2528329993979190195_o to!
This year the Jammers crew is captained for the first time by the extremely smooth dude Mr Daniel Martin, who’s along with his team of experienced and debutante jammers have put together a selection of songs just for this event! This is usually voted the highlight of PCX, so make sure you’re here!!

This three day dance party is brought to you by Swingtown Rebels, but more specifically by the
Swingtown Rebels “Committee of Awesome Events”. Everyone wears multiple hats and pitches in with ideas, effort and enthusiasm to the whole event, but also gets to wear their own special hats (metaphorically speaking)!
Alicia Moggre – Team Captain, Sunday night event manager, bands co-ordinator
Nathan Allpress – Artist in Chief, Registrations co-ordinator, Thursday event manager
Shona Hughes – Friday night chieftain, primary venues co-ordinator
Sandra Frank – website guru, Sunday night event manager
Angela Brett – Artistic team, Saturday night event manager, Sunday afternoon manager
Beth Hodgson – Saturday and Sunday late nights manager, committee apprentice

This is an enthusiastic, hardworking crew of folks who volunteer large amounts of their time, effort and love behind the scenes to bring this event to you, just for the love of swing dancing and the rewards of seeing so many people enjoying the festival!

If you’ve got a question on the weekend or are simply bubbling over with excitement, find one of these wonderful people, ask a question, have a dance or give them a high five! Equally if you have any concerns or observations regarding safety and happiness of people at the event please come and talk to them, or email swingtownrebels@gmail.com. We promise anything you raise will be taken seriously and treated confidentially.
